What is this game?

An arcade-style vertical shooter made only of text. The enemies are drawn straight from the lab.ascii text art collection, and each one moves in a way that fits it: rabbits hop, ghosts fade out and slimes split in two.

There are eight stages: meadow, deep sea, Halloween night, winter, deep forest, neon city, arcade and outer space, each ending with a boss. Regular enemies shoot too, each in their own way, and later stages bring tougher enemies that fire more often and faster. The final boss is the black hole scene from Motion art, drawn live inside the game. Everything runs in your browser, and your best score and the stages you reached are saved in this browser only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play?

Your plane fires on its own. On a computer, move with the arrow keys or WASD, press Space for a bomb and P to pause. On a phone, drag anywhere on the screen and the plane follows; tap the bomb button below.

What do the items do?

[P] raises your firepower, up to four levels; getting hit drops it one level. [B] is a bomb that clears every enemy shot on screen and heavily damages all enemies. Each bomb costs you points, though, and clearing a stage without one earns a bonus (both grow in later stages). Hamsters and hedgehogs drop P, turtles and shields drop B, and presents and TVs always drop one or the other. A few other enemies across the stages carry a P too. [C] brings a wingman: a slightly smaller ship that flies beside you and fires with you (a little slower than your ship, and P does not power it up). You can have up to four, two on each side. If you get hit while you have one, you still lose a life, but you lose a wingman instead of firepower. Each stage has one enemy carrying a C.

Can I pick a stage?

Any stage you have reached can be picked on the title screen. Your progress is saved in this browser only.

Where do the enemy drawings come from?

They are from the lab.ascii text art collection. Only original lab.ascii drawings that need no credit are used.
