How the ASCII art generator works
ASCII art draws letters and pictures using only the characters on a keyboard. The text banner tool on lab.ascii uses FIGlet fonts, a format that dates back to the early 1990s. A FIGlet font stores a small multi-line drawing for every letter, and the generator places those drawings side by side in the order you typed them. You can compare 12 fonts with very different moods, such as Standard, Slant, and Doom, and click any result to copy it.
FIGlet fonts have no Korean letters, so most generators return nothing for Hangul. lab.ascii draws Korean text off-screen in a heavy typeface, divides the shape into small cells, and fills each cell with a character such as █ or #. Image conversion works the same way: the brightness of each part of the photo decides which character is used. All of this happens in your browser, and neither your text nor your images are sent to a server.
The output is aligned for monospaced fonts. On Discord or in a GitHub README, wrap it in a ``` code block. In narrow chat windows, pick a font marked “Good for narrow screens” so lines do not wrap. If the font in the destination app would still break the alignment, save the result as a PNG and send it as an image.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes. Every tool is free and needs no account. You can use what you make for personal or commercial purposes.
Does it work with Korean text?
Yes. When you type Hangul, the tool switches to Hangul mode, draws the text as an image, and converts that image to ASCII characters.
The lines break when I paste on mobile.
Chat apps are narrow and do not use monospaced fonts. Use a font marked “Good for narrow screens”, or wrap the text in ``` where code blocks are supported. On a phone, the Share button sends the result as an image, which always keeps its shape.
The art looks wrong in Notepad.
Notepad is probably using a font that is not monospaced, or word wrap is on and the window is too narrow. Choose a monospaced font such as Consolas and turn off word wrap.
Are uploaded images stored on a server?
No. Image conversion runs entirely in your browser and the file is not sent anywhere.
What background does the PNG use?
The PNG uses the same dark background and green text as the result box.
