ABOUT

How to paste text art without breaking it

Text art is a picture made by lining up keyboard characters and Unicode symbols. One-line kaomoji such as ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ or ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ look almost the same in any app, but multi-line pieces such as the cat or the cake only work when every character stays in its column.

Multi-line art is aligned for monospaced fonts, where every character has the same width. On Discord, GitHub, and other places that support code blocks, wrap it in ``` and it keeps its shape. In chat apps that use proportional fonts, stick to one-line kaomoji or save a PNG and send it as an image. In Notepad, choose a monospaced font such as Consolas and turn off word wrap.

Block characters such as █ ▄ ▀ vary slightly in width and height between fonts. To send exactly what you see, use Save PNG under a card. The image keeps the card’s background, text color, and line spacing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the art look squashed in my chat app?

Most chat apps use proportional fonts, so multi-line art loses its alignment. Use a one-line kaomoji, wrap the art in a ``` code block where supported, or save a PNG and send it as an image.

Can I use these commercially?

Sources differ by piece. Most were drawn for lab.ascii or come from openly licensed kaomoji (CC0 and CC BY 4.0), but the creator and permission of some original items have not been confirmed, so commercial use is not guaranteed for every piece. For products or advertising, check the terms of use and prefer art you created yourself.

What does the PNG look like?

It uses the card preview’s background, text color, and line spacing at a 16px text size. If you save in dark mode, the image has a dark background.
