3D model converter 3D models to ASCII art

Upload an STL, 3MF or OBJ file and see its 3D shape drawn in characters, turning on screen. Find the angle you like, then copy it as text or save a PNG or a turntable GIF.

Drag the preview left or right to turn it. With a mouse you can also drag up or down to tilt it.

Copy text copies the current view as text. It keeps its shape in any monospace font.

Make ASCII art from your 3D model

  1. Drop an STL, 3MF or OBJ file, or start with the sample robot. 3MF projects saved from a slicer open as they are.
  2. Drag the preview or change tilt and zoom to find the angle you like. You can also pick the width, characters and color.
  3. Copy the text to paste it anywhere, save the current view as a PNG, or save a full turn as a turntable GIF.

Frequently asked questions

Is my 3D model uploaded to a server?

No. Reading the file, drawing it in characters and saving PNGs or GIFs all happen in your browser. If you allow visit statistics, this page’s screen is recorded, but file names and the resulting text and images are left out of the recording.

Which files can I open?

STL (binary and text), 3MF and OBJ, up to 100 MB and 1,000,000 triangles. 3MF projects from Bambu Studio, Orca Slicer and PrusaSlicer open with all their parts and placement, and helper parts that only change colors or settings are left out.

Are the colors painted in my file shown?

Yes. The page reads 3MF material colors, filaments painted in Bambu Studio, Orca Slicer and PrusaSlicer, OBJ vertex colors, material colors from an MTL file uploaded with its OBJ, and the colors some STL files carry, and draws them with “File colors”. Dark colors that would vanish into the background, such as black filament, are lifted a little. Files without colors use the blue metal tone or the text color you pick.

What about SolidWorks, Fusion or STEP files?

Native CAD files (SLDPRT, IPT, F3D and others) and STEP or IGES files can’t be opened yet. Export the model as STL or 3MF from your CAD program; almost every CAD program can export STL.

How do I save the result?

Copy text copies the current view so you can paste it into a README, Discord or a terminal. PNG saves the current view as an image, and the turntable GIF saves a 6-second animation that makes one full turn from the current angle.

My model is lying on its side.

CAD and 3D printing files usually point Z up, while OBJ and game models usually point Y up. The page picks one from the file type; if the model lies on its side, switch the up axis.
