Frequently asked questions

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?

No. Reading the GIF, converting it to ASCII and creating the new GIF all happen in your browser. The file never leaves your device.

Which GIFs can I convert?

Animated GIFs up to 10 MB, 10 seconds, 1024px per side and 500 frames. Short clips with a simple background and clear contrast give the sharpest result.

Can I convert an MP4 or other video?

Only GIFs are supported for now. Turn a video into a short GIF first. For a single photo, use the image to ASCII converter, and for a spinning donut or cube, try Motion art.

Where can I use the ASCII animation?

Post the saved GIF in Discord, chat apps, social media or a GitHub README. If you need plain text, copy the current frame as text.
