About lab.ascii
lab.ascii is a free web tool that turns text and photos into ASCII art. It runs in your browser with nothing to install and no account to create.
What can it do?
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text banner | Turns your text into large character banners in 12 FIGlet fonts. Type Korean and it switches to Hangul mode and draws a Hangul banner |
| Image to ASCII | Turns a photo into a picture made of characters. Adjust width, brightness, contrast, and character set, then save as text or a colored PNG |
| Text art | Pick popular text art and kaomoji and copy them |
| Fancy text | Converts English letters to Unicode styles such as 𝓗𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸, 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨, and Ⓗⓔⓛⓛⓞ |
You can copy the result or save it as a TXT or PNG file. When using or distributing it, check the terms that apply to the original content, fonts, and gallery art. See the Terms of Use for details.
Why was it made?
There are many ASCII art generators, but most return nothing when you type Korean. And when you paste the result into a chat app, the lines break, with little explanation of why or what to do about it.
lab.ascii was made to solve those two problems.
- Korean works. When you type Hangul, the tool draws the letters in a heavy typeface and fills that shape with characters.
- It starts from where you will paste the result. Each font shows how wide its result is, and on a phone the narrow fonts are recommended. The guides explain how to keep the art intact in each app.
How does it work?
Every conversion happens inside your browser, without uploading your text or images for processing. See the Privacy Policy for details about content you choose to share or send to support, and older shared links.
- Text banners use the FIGlet font format, created in 1991. The font files were published by their respective authors, and the conversion uses the open-source library figlet.js.
- Hangul banners and image conversion read the brightness of a drawing with the browser’s canvas feature and turn it into characters.
- The typefaces on the site are Pretendard and JetBrains Mono.
Copyright notices and the full licenses for the display fonts are available in the font license notice.
Principles
- Every tool is free and needs no account.
- The text you type and the images you add are not collected.
- Running costs are covered by advertising. Ads are kept away from the copy and save buttons.
