What is DEEP DRILL?

DEEP DRILL is a pixel mining game where a miner drills down into the earth. There are six layers, from topsoil to obsidian, and deeper layers are harder and hold more valuable ore. A run ends when you reach the ancient core 260 m down, and your time becomes your record.

Your oxygen keeps dropping underground, and it drops faster the deeper you go. Climb back up your tunnel before it runs out, sell your ore at the exchange and upgrade your drill, oxygen tank, bag, headlamp and climbing gear at the shop. If your oxygen hits zero you faint, lose the ore in your bag, pay 10% of your money as a rescue fee and start again on the surface.

It is inspired by mining games such as Motherload, SteamWorld Dig and Mr. Driller. Every sprite is hand-drawn on a 16×16 pixel grid, and each new run digs into freshly generated ground.

Sign in with Google to save your run to your account, continue it on other devices and put your time to the core on the leaderboard. You can play without signing in, but then nothing is saved and your run disappears when you close the page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play?

On a computer, move with the arrow keys or WASD. Push against a blocked tile to dig it. Use ↑ to climb your tunnel and to enter a shop. Q uses an oxygen capsule, E uses a return beacon and P pauses. On a phone, hold the arrow pad or press the game screen around the miner to move that way.

Why can’t I dig upward?

The drill only digs down and sideways. To come back up you climb the tunnel you dug on the way down, so the path you choose is also your way home. Better climbing gear lets you climb faster.

What happens when my oxygen runs out?

You faint and the rescue team pulls you to the surface. You lose all the ore in your bag and pay 10% of your money as a rescue fee. Your gear and your tunnels stay, so you can head straight back down.

My drill bounces off and says it needs a Lv3 drill.

That tile is too hard for your current drill. Upgrade your drill at the shop to open the next layer. Boulders inside a layer are two levels harder than the layer itself, so go around them or come back later with a better drill.

Is my run saved?

Yes, when you are signed in. Your run is saved to your account when you sell ore, close the shop, pause or faint, and every 20 seconds while you play, so you can continue on another device by signing in with the same Google account. Without signing in nothing is saved, and closing or reloading the page loses your run. If you sign in partway through, the run you were playing moves to your account.

How does the leaderboard work?

The faster you reach the ancient core, the higher you rank. If you are signed in when you reach the core, your time is posted automatically; if not, you can sign in from the end screen to post it. The leaderboard only shows your nickname, time, money earned and number of rescues, and the weekly board resets every Monday at 00:00 KST (Sunday 15:00 UTC).
