Birthday Message Ideas: Decorate Texts With Symbols and Send an ASCII Letter

From one-line symbols to an ASCII letter sent by link, without art falling apart in chat apps.

Last updated:

“Happy birthday!” is fine on its own, but a few symbols or a small drawing make the same words feel more thoughtful. The catch is that drawings often fall apart once you paste them into a chat app. This guide goes from decorations that never break to an ASCII letter that types itself out when opened.

One-line decorations

The safest option is a single line. One line looks almost the same in any font, so it works in every chat app.

You can also frame the name, as in 『Alex』 happy birthday!, which stands out in a group chat. Nickname symbols makes framed names in one go.

Sending a cake: multi-line art can break

Multi-line drawings like a cake or balloons only work when every line lines up.

Most chat apps use fonts where spaces and symbols have different widths, so the lines shift. Two fixes:

  1. In the birthday text art, set Paste into to the app you use. Telegram and Discord get a code block that keeps the lines aligned.
  2. To keep the exact look anywhere, choose “Image” and send it as a picture.

More detail is in Why ASCII art breaks in chat apps.

For something more special, try an ASCII letter. Write a message and send the link. When they open it, a HAPPY BDAY banner and a cake appear line by line and your message types itself out, like a terminal.

  1. In ASCII letter, pick the Birthday occasion and a picture such as a cake, balloons, or a gift box.
  2. Fill in the recipient, your message, and your name. The preview shows exactly what they will see.
  3. Click Send as link. On phones the share sheet opens; on computers the link is copied.

The letter lives only after the # in the link, so it is never stored on a server. Anyone with the link can read it, though, so send it in a private chat rather than a big group. The recipient can answer right away with Reply.

Message ideas

What you say matters more than the decoration. Use these as they are or tweak them.

For a friend

Happy birthday! Here is to more good food and more laughs this year.
Your present is coming when we meet ☆

For a partner

Thank you for being born.
Today is all about you ♡

For a parent

Happy birthday, Mom.
Stay healthy, and I promise to call more this year.

For a coworker

Happy birthday!
Thanks for always helping out. Have a great day.

Before you send

  • Double-check the name. A letter sent by link cannot be edited, so a typo means making a new link.
  • Send it to yourself first to see how it looks on your phone.
  • Want it to arrive at midnight? Write it the night before and send the link when the clock strikes twelve.

Beyond birthdays, ASCII letter also covers good-luck messages, love notes, thank-yous, and Halloween, Christmas, and New Year cards.
