Instagram Fonts: How Fancy Text in Bios Actually Works

Fancy letters are Unicode characters, not fonts. They work in a bio but not in a username.

Last updated:

You have probably seen script like 𝓗𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸 or bold text like 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨 in an Instagram bio. Instagram has no font setting, so how do people do it? These letters are not a font at all. They are separate Unicode characters.

Different characters, not a different font

Unicode includes complete A to Z alphabets in bold, script, Fraktur, and double-struck styles, originally added for mathematical notation. A computer treats H and 𝐇 as two different characters with different code points, not as one letter in two fonts.

That is why fancy text keeps its look when you copy it. No font setting travels with it, because none is needed. The fancy text generator simply swaps each letter you type for its counterpart in these alphabets.

How to use it

  1. Type English letters or numbers in the fancy text generator.
  2. All 24 styles update at once. Click a row to copy just that row.
  3. In Instagram, open Edit profile and paste it into your bio or name.

Here is what “Hello” looks like.

Style Result
Script 𝓗𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸
Bold 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨
Fraktur ℌ𝔢𝔩𝔩𝔬
Double-struck ℍ𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕠
Circled Ⓗⓔⓛⓛⓞ
Black circled 🅗🅔🅛🅛🅞
Superscript ʰᵉˡˡᵒ
Small caps ʜᴇʟʟᴏ
Upside down ollǝH
Strikethrough H̶e̶l̶l̶o̶

Where does it work?

Field Works?
Instagram bio Yes
Instagram name Usually
Instagram username (handle) No. Only letters, numbers, periods, and underscores
TikTok and X bios Yes
Discord display name and About Me Yes. Usernames do not allow it
Game nicknames Depends on the game

Fields used for logging in or for profile URLs usually allow only a fixed set of characters. If a field refuses to save, keep the fancy text for your bio or display name.

Before you paste

It may show up as boxes

If the reader’s device has no font for a character, they see an empty box (□) or a question mark. Bold, script, and circled letters display on most phones. Rare styles such as parenthesized (🄗⒠⒧⒧⒪) or slashed letters may be missing on older devices. Always check the preview before you save.

Some letters turn into emoji

In the black squared style (🅷🅴🅻🅻🅾), the letters 🅰 🅱 🅾 🅿 also exist as emoji. On some devices they appear as red blood-type emoji while the other letters stay black. If the letters look uneven, pick another style.

It uses more of the character limit

Instagram bios have a character limit, and fancy letters can take more of it than they appear to. Strikethrough and underline add a combining mark after every letter, which doubles the count. Bold and script letters come from outside Unicode’s basic range, and some apps count each one as two characters. If your bio fills up faster than expected, this is why.

Screen readers and search read it differently

Screen readers may announce 𝐇 as “mathematical bold capital H” or skip it, so a fancy name may not reach people who rely on them. Search may also treat it differently from normal text. If people need to find you by name, keep your name in plain letters and use fancy text for a short accent.

Decorating names in other scripts

Unicode has no bold or script versions of Korean, Japanese, or most non-Latin scripts, so those characters stay unchanged. Use the Frames section at the bottom of the page instead. Frames work with any text.
