Nickname Symbols: Decorate Your Name, Fix Rejected Names, and Make a Blank Name

Wrap it, put symbols between letters, and check whether a game will accept it. Blank-name characters included.

A nickname is short, but it is the text people see most: your game character, your Instagram name, your Discord nickname. A few symbols change the whole mood, yet games often reject them with “invalid characters”. This guide covers how to decorate a nickname and what to check when it will not save.

Three ways to decorate a nickname

Wrap it in symbols

The most common approach. Your letters stay the same and symbols go around them, so it works for any script, including Korean or Japanese names.

☆Luna☆
『Luna』
【Luna】
♡ Luna ♡
★彡 Luna 彡★
꧁ Luna ꧂

Put symbols between letters

Slip a small symbol between each letter. It suits short names.

L♡u♡n♡a
N·o·v·a

Change the Latin letters themselves

Latin letters can be swapped for Unicode look-alikes such as 𝓛𝓾𝓷𝓪 or 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐚. See all 24 styles in Fancy text.

Type your name into Nickname symbols to see all three at once. Click any line to copy just that line.

When a game rejects your nickname

Check the character set

Services accept different sets of characters. Instagram names and Discord nicknames take almost any Unicode character, but many older Korean games only accept characters from CP949 (Unified Hangul Code), the code page Korean Windows used for years.

Characters In CP949
★ ☆ ♡ ♥ ※ ♪ ♬ Yes
『 』 【 】 《 》 Yes
乂 Yes
ღ ✿ ⋆ ✧ ☾ No
彡 ꧁ ꧂ No
𝓛 𝐋 (fancy Latin letters) No

So ☆Luna☆ has a good chance of working in an older game, while ★彡 Luna 彡★ may be rejected or turned into ? because of 彡. The tool marks each line as CP949 or not, and CP949-safe only hides the rest.

Games outside Korea often have their own rules, and many allow only letters, digits, and a few marks such as underscores. If a symbol will not save, that game simply does not allow it.

Count the bytes

Games that set limits like “6 Korean or 12 Latin characters” usually count Korean and symbols as 2 bytes and Latin letters and digits as 1.

Nickname Bytes
Luna7 5
☆Luna☆ 8
지우 4

Every symbol adds 2 bytes. If a name hits the limit, try a symbol on one side only. The 8B on each line in the tool is this byte count.

Making a blank nickname

A “blank” or invisible nickname uses characters that render as empty space.

Character Code In CP949
Hangul filler U+3164 Yes
Braille blank U+2800 No
Ideographic space U+3000 Yes

The Hangul filler exists to fill an empty slot when composing Korean letters, and the braille blank is an empty braille cell. You cannot select invisible characters on screen, so the Invisible characters buttons in Nickname symbols copy them directly.

Many games and services block names made only of blanks. If it will not save, that service does not allow it, so check its rules before trying to work around them.

Before you decorate

  • Friends need to find you. Lots of symbols make a name hard to search for. One on each side is usually enough.
  • Screen readers read symbols aloud or skip them, so your name may sound different to people who use one.
  • Fonts differ by device. Rare characters such as ꧁꧂ can show up as boxes (□) on older devices. Check your name on another device after saving it.

Try names side by side in Nickname symbols. For multi-line pictures such as hearts or cats, browse the text art gallery.
