ABOUT

About the Digital font

Glenn Chappell made Digital in 1994 from the Bubble font. Instead of drawing new letter shapes, it places each character between | | and closes it with +-+ above and below, like a display board or keyboard keys.

It is three rows tall, and “HELLO” takes only 11 columns, the shortest of the 12. Digits and symbols go into boxes as well, which makes it handy for dates and scores. The browser version of the font that lab.ascii uses has broken Latin extended characters such as Ä and é, so those characters are reported instead of drawn.

Works well for

Phone chats, decorating dates and scores, and short names.

Frequently asked questions

How tall is the Digital font?

Banners in Digital are 3 lines tall. “HELLO” comes out 11 columns wide, and each letter takes about 2.0 columns on average. It is narrow enough for phone chats.

Does Digital support Korean?

FIGlet fonts have no Korean letters, so Digital cannot draw Hangul. Use the Korean ASCII art tool for Korean text.

Where does a Digital banner stay aligned?

Anywhere that shows text in a monospaced font. On Discord, Telegram, and GitHub, wrap it in a ``` code block (choose “Discord · Telegram” under “Paste into” to copy it that way); in chat apps with proportional fonts, choose “Image” to send a picture.

Can I use Digital banners commercially?

Digital ships with the official FIGlet distribution under the BSD-3-Clause license. Rights to the words in your banner, such as company names or trademarks, still need to be checked separately.
