ABOUT

About the Standard font

Standard was refined in 1993 by Glenn Chappell and Ian Chai, the authors of FIGlet. Run figlet without choosing a font and this is what you get, which makes it the ASCII banner developers know best. Many fonts, including Slant, Big, and Small, were built on top of it.

Its strokes use only basic characters such as / \ | and _, so it keeps its shape in any monospaced font. At five lines tall with moderate letter widths, it suits project names and short words.

Works well for

The first line of a GitHub README, a comment at the top of a source file, or a terminal welcome screen: anywhere you want a clean, readable banner.

Frequently asked questions

How tall is the Standard font?

Banners in Standard are 5 lines tall. “HELLO” comes out 30 columns wide, and each letter takes about 6.2 columns on average. For phone chats, compare it with narrow fonts such as Small or Mini.

Does Standard support Korean?

FIGlet fonts have no Korean letters, so Standard cannot draw Hangul. Use the Korean ASCII art tool for Korean text.

Where does a Standard banner stay aligned?

Anywhere that shows text in a monospaced font. On Discord and GitHub, wrap it in a ``` code block; in chat apps with proportional fonts, save a PNG and send the image.

Can I use Standard banners commercially?

Standard ships with the official FIGlet distribution under the BSD-3-Clause license. Rights to the words in your banner, such as company names or trademarks, still need to be checked separately.
